The department was established in 2004.

The first head in 2004 was Academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Borys Mokin - scientific director of the scientific school, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, People's Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 1st convocation, who voted for the Independence of Ukraine, was the Chairman of the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine “Informatics and Cybernetics”, was the rector of VNTU (1989-2010), Doctor of Technical Sciences in specialties 124 and 126, Professor, guarantor of the educational and scientific program “System Analysis” of the level of “Doctor of Philosophy” in specialty 124 System Analysis, prepared several Doctors of Sciences and about 30 Candidates of Sciences and 3 Doctors of Philosophy, including in specialty 124, author of more than 400 scientific and educational and methodological works. 

After completing the doctoral dissertation on March 1, 2005 and starting the defense procedure in Kyiv at the NAS of Ukraine, Vitaliy Mokin was elected as the head. His current achievements: scientific director of the EDEM research group of the department since 2000, was an expert on IT issues of projects funded by the EU, UN, OSCE, Global Environmental Fund (USA), Eastern Europe Fund, TASIC, Horizon 2020 and funded by funds from Sweden (SIDA), Austria, the Netherlands, was a scientific director of more than 50 research projects implemented in all regions of Ukraine and abroad, was a freelance advisor to the Minister of Environmental Protection of Ukraine (2009-2010), was a freelance advisor to the Head of the State Agency for Water Resources of Ukraine (2009-2019), is the Chairman of the Southern Bug Basin Council, is a member of the Scientific and Methodological Commission on Information Technologies, Automation and Telecommunications in the Higher Education Sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and in it is the Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee on System Analysis (2018-2024) and is the Deputy Chairman of the Subcommittee on Systems Analysis and Data Science (since 2024), was a member of the Working Group on Mathematical Modeling of Problems Related to the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus Epidemic in Ukraine (2020-2022), which regularly prepared analytics for the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine before the war, Kaggle Grandmaster (the first in Ukraine to receive this title in the Python laptop developers nomination), Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, prepared 12 PhDs in the specialties "Systems Analysis", "Information Systems and Technologies" and Candidates of Technical Sciences in the specialty "Information Technologies", guarantor of the OPP "Information Technologies for Data and Image Analysis" at the "Master's" level in specialty 126 Information Systems and Technologies, author of more than 500 scientific and educational and methodological works. 

All 100% teachers studied in postgraduate studies, of which 93% already have the scientific degree of “Doctor of Philosophy” or “Candidate of Technical Sciences”, one is still working on a dissertation. The scientific degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences in specialties that correspond to modern specialties 124 and 126 (as well as 121, 122) is held by 5 (20%) teachers. The academic title of professor is held by 5 (20%) teachers, and associate professor – by 6 (40%) teachers. The department employs two deputy deans and a scientific secretary of the faculty of intellectual information technologies and automation. 3 teachers have been scientific supervisors of VNTU research laboratories since their establishment, 2 teachers are their heads; 6 teachers are heads of the department’s educational laboratories.
