Ecological Atlas of the Dniester River Basin

Work on atlas maps: 2007-2012.

In 2012, the bilingual "Ecological Atlas of the Dniester River Basin" was published, in the development of which the doctor of technical sciences, professor Vitaly Borisovych Mokin, the head of the SAIT department and the associate professor of the SAIT Kryzhanovskyi Evgeniy Mykolayovych took an active part in its development.

The atlas was created as part of the Dniester-III project - "Cross-border cooperation and sustainable management in the Dniester river basin: phase III - implementation of the Action Program" of the international initiative "Environment and Security". This project was implemented by the UN Economic Commission for Europe, the OSCE and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) with the support of the governments of Finland, Sweden, Ukraine and Moldova.

Currently, more than 5 million people in Ukraine and more than 2.7 million people in Moldova live in the Dniester basin. "Ecological Atlas of the Dniester River Basin" is the first attempt to visually present the ecological state of the transboundary river, which has a total length of 1,350 km. In its basin there are more than 14 thousand rivers with a length of about 100 km.

The atlas was developed based on information prepared for the pilot version of the GIS and materials collected specifically for this publication. It is a kind of collection of visual and bright graphic materials dedicated to the ecological state of the Dniester River basin - it has more than 30 thematic maps of the basin, numerous graphs, diagrams and photographs. It is intended for specialists in the field of environmental protection, authorities and the interested public.

For the first time, the Dniester got its own portal on the Internet with cartographic information about the entire basin. The materials of the atlas are based on the information of the updated Dniester geoinformation portal, which was created to facilitate the correct strategic and operational decisions. First of all, the decision related to the implementation of the new Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Protection and Sustainable Development of the Dniester River Basin, signed by Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova on November 29, 2012 in Rome.

The atlas was created by the information group of the "Dniester III" project, the ecological network "Zoi" (Switzerland) and UNEP / GRID-Arendal. Work on it can serve as an example of successful cooperation between specialists of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, who are actively concerned with solving common environmental problems in the river basin. In addition to the atlas, the Dniester Geoinformation Portal has also been prepared.

Professor Mokin V.B. led a group of experts from Ukraine on information management - data collection and conversion in GIS. This group included associate professor of the department E.M. Kryzhanovsky, who is also a co-author of the concept of the Ecological Atlas of the Dniester.

The general layout of the publication was carried out in Norway and Moldova.

Ecological atlas of the Southern Bug river basin

Work on atlas maps: 2005-2009.

In 2009, the "Ecological Atlas of the Southern Bug River Basin" was published, in the development of which the doctor of technical sciences, professor Vitaly Borisovych Mokin, head of the department and associate professor of the department Kryzhanovskyi Yevgeny Mykolayovych took an active part in its development.

The atlas includes the following maps:

  • administrative map;
  • river network;
  • the main reservoirs of the basin;
  • water intakes;
  • discharges of sewage and return water;
  • water quality monitoring network;
  • ecological assessment of water quality;
  • physical map;
  • climate in the cold period (November-March);
  • climate in the warm period (April-October);
  • vegetation and transport network;
  • urbanized areas;
  • agricultural land;
  • nature reserve fund;
  • linear diagram of the Southern Bug River;
  • linear schemes of Sinyukha and Ingul rivers.

Correction of hydrographic layers and monitoring network was carried out by Vinnytsia National Technical University (Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences V. B. Mokin, E. M. Kryzhanovsky, N. M. Honchar, O. V. Rozvodyuk).

All information on the basin was provided by the Basin Management of Water Resources of the Southern Bug River (V. K. Hamlyaviy, Yu. S. Gavrykov, N. P. Bedz, N. V. Tananchuk, V. V. Dmytryshina, T. G. Vlasova, Viktorov M.S.).

Data on the amount of agricultural land were provided by the regional main administrations of land resources of Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and Cherkasy regions. The data on the objects of the nature reserve fund of the basin were provided by the State Service of Conservation Affairs of Ukraine.

The preparation of data for the creation of thematic maps was carried out by professor V. B. Mokin and E. M. Kryzhanovskyi.

The atlas "Wetlands International" was published with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Ministry of International Relations of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
