System analysis of IT solutions

Ideaton

History of the contest

Every year at the beginning of December, since 2016, the Department of System Analysis and Information Technologies has held the Ideathon "System Analysis of IT Solutions" for students of the 1st year of the bachelor's degree in specialties 124 "System Analysis" (educational program "System Analysis") and 126 "Information systems and technologies" (educational program "Applied information technologies"). There were only 3 force majeure exceptions:

  • in 2019, the competition was postponed from December to spring, but in the spring of 2020, the coronavirus began and the competition was canceled;
  • in December 2022, the competition fell on a series of "blackouts" due to Russian shelling of power grids, which made it impossible for students to prepare for the competition, then the department decided to postpone the competition to May 2023, during the annual Scientific and Technical Conference of the divisions of Vinnytsia National Technical University (NTKP VNTU), where there is a separate section of systems analysis and information technologies based on the department of the same name;
  • In December 2023, the competition was postponed to spring 2024, but in December 2024 it took place according to the usual schedule.

So, the competition has been held in early December 8 times: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023 (instead of 2022), 2024 in the spring (instead of 2023) and 2024 (in the fall). The next competition is planned to be held in December 2025.

Rules and conditions of participation

Students form teams. Participation of students from different groups is allowed. For example, in 2017, the team formed the headman and her deputy of the SA-17b group and the headman and his deputy of the 2IST-17b group. There are other examples. The number of team members is allowed from 1 to 5. For all the years, the first 3 places were taken only once (in 2017) team from 1 student. Team members share the roles of "IT manager", "System architect", "System analyst", "Programmer" (backend, frontend, etc.) and "Designer" (some combine them). In 2016, the competition was classified as a hackathon and some teams had a pilot sample, so there was still a role of "Tester". In the following years, it was decided not to require a pilot sample, since students do not yet have special knowledge, it is more valuable to establish teamwork, learn to generate and present ideas, so the competition was changed to an "ideaton".

The ideologist of the competition is the head of the SAIT department Vitaly Mokin, which during 2008-2015 held various computer contests, including international, developed system of requirements and criteria. It is almost unchanged throughout the years, although it is regularly revised, taking into account, first of all, the recommendations of the jury members of the previous competition. Within the scope of the "Introduction to the profession" discipline, the teacher uses simple examples to explain what IT solutions are, how they are developed, and how they should be designed. One of the key goals of this discipline and competition is to interest students, to give them the opportunity to reveal their potential. In the future, they can continue to work on their solution with this or another team within the limits project training. They are taught to prepare IT startups more professionally and prepare documentation in the disciplines "IT Project Management", "Information Systems Design", "Programming and Algorithmization", "Software Creation Technologies", etc. For those who want to do it even more professionally, the IITA faculty has been operating for several years Sikorsky Challenge Vinnytsia Startup School. To enter it, you must pass a certain selection. There are also budget places, but you need to have considerable experience and well-thought-out ideas. Also, later the participants of the Ideaton can participate in other city, republican and international competitions and ideatons.

Jury

The head of the jury all years is the ideologist of the competition -  Vitaly Mokin. And the members of the jury are usually teachers of the disciplines "Introduction to the profession", "IT project management", employees of IT companies with significant real experience of implementing projects in various fields, from among the graduates of the department of past years (Team Leader of the IT enterprise of the NVP "Joint business", PhD Volodymyr Storchak; employees of a number of IT companies Serhii Dovgopolyuk, Mykola Horash, etc.), as well as the head of the research laboratory on problems of the higher school of the VNTU Olga Voytsekhovska. Traditionally, it is the employees of IT companies who ask the most active questions, and then they express their comments and recommendations to each team on how they could improve their solution in the next one, if they decide to develop it.

Guests from among managerial-level IT specialists are invited to the event (in 2023, the director of the information technology department of the Vinnytsia City Council Volodymyr Romanenko, the deputy technical director of the INNOVINNPROM company Andriy Lukhverchyk, and the Team Leader from the Onseo company participated). They also ask questions, provide comments, analyze works and over time take this into account when discussing directions for improving the department's educational programs, during the organization of production practice, choosing areas of cooperation, employment of our graduates, etc.

In different years, the teachers of the discipline "Introduction to the Profession" and co-organizers of the Ideathon, in addition to Prof. Vitaliy Mokin, were teachers of the SAIT department Andriy Yascholt, Ilona Varchuk, Arsen Losenko and Mykhailo Dratovany. In 2022, the method of teaching the disciplines "Introduction to the profession", "IT project management",  "Programming and Algorithmization", "Information Systems Design", was improved due to the fact that the teachers of these disciplines (Mykhailo Dratovany, Yevgeny Kryzhanovskyi, Sergey Zhukov, respectively) together with Prof. Vitaly Mokin, during February-June 2022, they underwent an internship at the University of Tartu (Estonia) within the framework of the project "Development of innovative capacity and entrepreneurial competence of Ukrainian universities: sharing best practice of Estonia (UnivEntre)", where they were taught how to teach students to develop and formalize their IT startups.

Topics and examples of solutions

Students will come up with interesting intellectual IT solutions in various areas:

  • IT and landscaping: Internet of things, technologies of augmented and virtual reality, smart technologies: smart glasses, etc.;
  • IT and drones: service system of the drone market in Ukraine: how to find the right drone;
  • Security and help for displaced people: application how to find the nearest shelter, where there are still places, how to find the "point of invincibility", where and how to get help for displaced people, etc.;

  • Trade: an application for selecting clothes using 3D visualization, an online store with an integrated AI stylist.

Competition criteria

Criteria demand to analyze modern analogues, identify their shortcomings, offer their own solutions in the field of data processing automation using modern IT and technical means that can complement them. Determine the target group of users and approaches to monetize the solution. Build a UML diagram of the solution's use cases and a class diagram to explain the different aspects of the solution. Think through the division of team members into roles, clearly assign each task. Develop a possible software interface, including mobile, applications, use of map and other services. Separate points are allocated for interface design and presentation design as a whole. Some teams even think of logos for their decision.

An important requirement is that ALL team members must report. But everyone must answer at least one question. If a team member cannot answer a question, then the captain or another team member can help him. In proportion to the place occupied, their role in the project and the level of the report and answers to questions, all participants will receive marks for a separate task from the discipline "Introduction to the profession" of groups of both specialties.

Publications and presentation of the best solutions

Prize-winners of the competition who take 1-3 places (sometimes they are taken by several teams), as a rule, receive a recommendation to make a report in the spring at the section of system analysis and information technologies of the Scientific and Technical Conference of the divisions of the Vinnytsia National Technical University with the publication of theses. Sometimes students who occupy lower places also receive such a recommendation, after a certain refinement of the idea.

IN Facebook group "IT VNTU / IT VNTU" Traditionally, the chairman of the jury highlights the results of the competition every year. And in 2021, students, on their own initiative, also recorded themselves video about how they participated in the then Ideaton.

In 2020 and 2021, the co-organizer of the Ideaton of those years, associate professor Andrii Yascholt, suggested that the prize-winners prepare banners with their solutions in A3 format - they are still in the auditoriums of the SAIT department.

The table below lists the prize-winners of all competitions and links to the summaries of the reports published by them based on the materials of the report at the competition. The winning teams of the competition held in May 2023 are dated “2022” because it was the “Ideathon 2022” held at a later date. Similarly, the date “2023” (Ideathon 2023) de facto refers to the competition held in spring 2024, so as not to be confused with the competition held in late 2024 and dated “2024”.
